Nothing says winter quite like a gloriously fragrant scented candle. Sure summer may be full of rosé on rooftops, long languid lunches and sun-drenched trips to the seaside but, as far as I’m concerned, any end-of-season sadness can be easily put to bed with the help of a cosy knit, a great boxset and some good scented candles. Just as daffodils delight at the start of spring so something warming and woody can lift the spirits when the nights draw in.
Of course, with Christmas just around the corner (yes, really), you’ll also thank yourself for having a stock of chic scent candles on hand for gift-giving emergencies. And, should you be so organised as to actually remember everyone on your list this year? Well, all the more for you then.
Here’s our pick of the newest, prettiest and most luxurious scented candles to display proudly on your coffee table this season.
Creed Birmanie Oud candle
Inspired by the scents traditionally associated with the Far East, Creed’s Birmanie Oud candle is hand-poured in France using the same concentrated infused oils also found in the house’s much-loved fragrances. Housed in elegant porcelain, expect a sweet and woody blend of styrax, tonka bean and benjoin.
Swaine Bridle Leather candle
Part of the debut candle collection from British leather goods brand Swaine, this scent takes its cues from the house’s heritage, blending warming cedarwood and floral bergamot with delicate notes of vanilla to evoke the unmistakable scent of bridle leather. A must for any country home.
Loewe Vela Wasabi candle
Just like its clothing and accessories, Loewe home scents are just the right amount offbeat and eccentric. Among its unusual fragrances are tomato leaves, oregano, ivy and marihuana (yes, really). My favourite as the nights draw in, however, is the spicy warmth of wasabi, which blends notes of basmati rice, pepper, and lemongrass. The chic glazed terracota holder is just the icing on the cake.
Tom Ford Bitter Peach candle
House in a votive packed with enough sunshine hues to brighten up even the darkest autumn day, Tom Ford’s Bitter Peach candle offers an intoxicating home fragrance version of one of the brand’s best-selling scents. Blending sweet Pêche de Vigne and Sicilian blood orange with spicy cardamom and a deep base of sandalwood, vanilla and patchouli, it’s elegant, warm and welcoming.
Trudon De Oro scented candle
Not quite ready to let go of summer just yet? Released earlier this year, Trudon’s De Oro candle evokes heady evenings in the Mediterranean with a scent centred around the freshness of orange blossom. Built on a base of peach, cedar and lily, vibrant heart notes of rosemary flower, gardenia and jasmine open out into the brightness of bergamot, laurel, mandarin and petitgrain.
Black Blaze Vetiver & Fig candle
Hand-poured in Australia and packaged in mouth-blown glass vessels that look as good as they smell, Black Blaze’s home fragrances celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of Australia’s flora and natural landscape. Blending fruity and earthy scents of vetiver, cedarwood, moss and fig, this rich, powerful fragrace easily fills any room.
L’Objet Coral scented candle
L’Objet’s show-stopping candles are as much decorative works of art as they are home fragrances. Coral, one of the brand’s bestsellers, comes in a chic Limoges porcelain vase finished with a coral sculpture and gilt edging. And as for the scent itself? Well, is there anything more festive than filling your home with the smell of Pink Champagne?
August & Piers Mystical candle
Available exclusively at Harvey Nichols, August & Piers Mystic candle is a heady blend of nectarine, plum, sandalwood and vanilla that’s perfect for warming homes as the weather cools. Poured into an elegantly minimalist votive, it’s the last word in understated style.
Etro Zefrio Candle
If the winter gloom has you in need of a little escapism, Etro’s new Zefrio candle takes its cues from the scents of the Mediterranean countryside. Chief among its layered notes is fine Pays lavender, grown as part of a Provencale sustainable agriculture programme, blended with rosemary, eucalyptus, red thyme and maritime pine.
Shaku Queen of the Night candle
Founded by a mother-and-daughter team and inspired by the culture, sights and smells of their time spent in India, fine home accessories brand Shaku creates gorgeous pieces guaranteed to elicit cries of ‘where did you get that?’ Its floral candles are blended in Scotland and hand-poured into unique ceramic pots made in Staffordshire, each of which features an illustration by founder Shakera Tayub.
Wings of Wisdom perfumed candles
Presented in fine bone china votives made in Stoke-on-Trent, each of Wings of Wisdom’s gorgeous candles is finished with mystical symbols picked out in 22-carat yellow gold. Each is scented to evoke certain memories and encourage a different healing energy, whether you’re in need of a rejuvenating pick-me-up or soothing relaxation. My favourites are the sweetly nostalgic A Watchful Eye and the light, refreshing Memories of Summer.
Eym + Laguna B refillable candle
What’s better than gifting a gorgeous scented candle? Gifting one they can keep using time and time again. This invigorating fragranced candle by Eym features notes of bergamot, black pepper and orange and comes in a hand-blown Murano glass bowl designed by Venetian glass specialist Laguna B. Once the original candle has burned down the bowl can be cleaned and either refilled with another Eym fragrance or used as a stunning home accessory.
