Not many people would choose to live next to their business partner but for sisters Christie and Rosanna Wollenberg it was a no-brainer. Having inherited a plot of land in Wimbledon from their late aunt, the duo, who founded jewellery house Otiumberg in 2016, decided to build near-identical Victorian townhouses next door to each other and renovated them over four years.
It was a labour of love, much like Otiumberg, which now possesses a loyal fanbase including Paul Mescal, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone and Anne Hathaway. Known for its simple, minimalistically chic pieces, when I stepped inside the Wollenberg sisters’ homes, it was clear this design ethos extends to their interior tastes. Think pared-back, forward-thinking designs that are as useful and practical as they are beautiful and striking.
Look more closely, however, and the eagle-eyed will spot some succinct differences between the two homes. Influenced by their previous careers – Christie worked as a buyer for Burberry in London and then in Dubai in PR for Louis Vuitton, while Rosanna has always been rooted in arts and branding, and has lived in Buenos Aires, Barcelona and New York – those small touches that make a house a home are individual to each of them. We sit down with the sisters to discuss personal style, interior aesthetics and their favourite rooms to escape to.
Inside Christie’s home
Christie: I’d say I go for quite a timeless look both in fashion and interiors. I tend to celebrate the materials I use in the home and then add in personal touches like art and home accessories which add the colour, like my beautiful blush pink velvet jewellery box which lives on my drawers in my bedroom. I use a lot of wood, marble and natural materials for the floor and walls.
For my own style, I am always drawn to well tailored trousers, oversized shirts with a beautiful cut in neutral colours, and then add in jewellery to finish the look – I have eight piercings so [that means] a lot of hoops. I live in Otiumberg jewellery and am always in samples and newly designed pieces. I like to see how I feel wearing them before we launch anything.
Rosanna: I always wear what makes me feel good and comfortable which tends to be oversized jeans and a shirt or simple T-shirt. If dressing up, I’ll add flair with some colourful shoes or a mule. Otherwise, like Christie, I tend to stick to neutral colours and accessorise with jewellery. I love mixing up our Otiumberg collection as the focal point of an outfit.
Similarly with my home, I’ve gone for lots of textured neutrals and wood, adding in art work and textiles to give it warmth and character. For example, I have a beautiful large red painting by Edwina Longe which adds such a great focal point and touch of characterful colour to an otherwise neutral living room.
Christie: [I’m] more on the side of minimalist. Less is more when it comes to design. There’s a beauty in subtle thoughtful design. Personal expression comes through the accessories both in my home and the jewellery I wear.
Rosanna: Definitely more minimalist. I’m exposed to so many images and visual noise with work that having a calming home where I can decompress and relax is what I love.
Christie: I started by looking at the materials I wanted for the floors and walls. I wanted texture in soft warm natural colours. I have a busy life with three kids and a business, so I knew I needed my home to be somewhere I could relax, that didn’t overstimulate me in terms of colours or patterns. Once I knew what these materials would be, I started to look at complementary materials for the kitchen, and then soft furnishings.
Rosanna: I looked at the portfolio of designers I love, such as Hollie Bowden and Studio Iro, as a starting point to see how they paired materials and colour palettes together. From there, it was really instinctual, spending hours on Pinterest and Instagram digging for the perfect tap or table.
Christie: I wanted a peaceful space using natural materials that I knew I would love for a long time. The plaster on the wall is a warm grey and has subtle fluid movement to it. I chose darker floorboards as the house was a new build and I wanted the space to feel warm, cosy and lived in rather than too modern and sterile. I added colour and a little fun through the blinds in various rooms, and the colour running through the viola marble. Again most colour comes through my art and the soft furnishings. I also have a lot of house plants which add gorgeous green tones to the space.
Christie: My kitchen. It opens up into our little garden and the best decision we made was to put a deep seated sofa in the room. My husband is the chef in the house and we spend most of our time in that room cooking, entertaining and hanging out with the kids. I love the marble I chose for the worktop, and the light wood for the kitchen itself. I feel peaceful in that room despite it being full of little humans most of the time.
Rosanna: My bedroom is so calming that I love getting into bed at night. I made sure the curtains were heavy and long so that they gathered up on the floor making the room feel so cosy. Alongside that, I have two of my favourite photographs (one from Jamie Wright and one from Jack Samels) framed that bring me such calm, along with two original artworks I purchased while living in Mexico City; both bringing me back to those moments. I kept the room very calming with a warm textured paint, fabric wall lights that give off a soft glow, and an antique wooden set of drawers sourced from eBay which have a lovely old character.
Christie: I have bought furnishings from so many different places, from Loaf to vintage chairs that I have upholstered. I love my rugs from Nordic Knots.
Rosanna: Like Christie, they came from all over. I have pieces from Ikea to vintage-sourced pieces on eBay and sustainable companies, such as Huguet in Mallorca. I’ve got my eye on a few items from Pinch in London when the time comes.
Christie: Relaxed, calming and warm.
Rosanna: Full of memories, soft and calming.
Christie: Think about it long term – will you be able to live with that colour or wallpaper for the next few years? Does it surpass the current trend and are you sure you won’t tire of it? You can always add in home accessories, you can’t easily change the walls or the floor.
Rosanna: It can be overwhelming so take it slow and enjoy the process!
Christie: Family, relaxation, good food, somewhere we can host our nearest and dearest, where good conversations happen, laughter and memories.
Rosanna: Family and safety. It’s somewhere you can be yourself, surrounded by the people and the things that make you happy.
